Our Work

We work in the following areas;

1. Health & Counseling: Giving Hope Foundation has focused on sensitizing young people in schools through Stay Safe Clubs, where young people are given a platform to interact with fellow youths and counselors on matters concerning Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH). We plan to hold a community sensitization event in November, 2011 that will sensitize young people on HIV and sexual transmitted illnesses.
We also plan two community sensitization exercises early next year aimed at promoting usage of safe water and educating households on issues related to indoor air pollution.

2. KidsGames and Sports: Because the school syllabuses in Uganda are very congested, children are being forced to attend school for over 10 hours daily, they are given limited break intervals and the schools offer very limited or no sports facilities at all. As a result, children are getting less involved in play and consequently developing stress-related illness that could have been prevented through sports. Sports help children develop physical skills, get exercise, make friends, have fun, learn to play as a member of a team, learn to play fair, and improve self-esteem.
We use uses KidsGames to train children on various aspects of life-skills through tailor-made experiential learning games. We are also supporting a children's soccer club called Makerere West Youth F.C - a community based youth soccer club with 32 children playing in different soccer galas, tournaments and currently lead a local youth league.

3. Child Advocacy: We promote safe schools and communities for children by educating parents, teachers and children on the best ways of handling children in contrast to the abusive traditional forms of punishment like battering, starvation, bullying and child labor among others. We encourage parents to adopt the best practices of disciplining children. We strive to ensure that children are safe, secure and protected for a healthy growth.

4. Music, Dance and Drama; We aim at promoting music, dance and drama among children and young people by encouraging them to get involved in activities including singing, dancing, acting, instrumental work, fashion and design shows, poetry, comedy and creative dance to  help children build their self-esteem and participation. We encourage students to form smaller groups in their local schools where they can easily socialize and identify with their friends. We plan a music show next year to showcase the children's talents.
5. Simple Sustainable Technologies; Through partnerships with other NGOs, we are promoting simple sustainable technologies like firewood management, low cost food warmers, hand-made briquettes from free charcoal dust and Paper and sawdust that is being used in a Top-Lit-UpDraft (TLUD) gasifier cookstove that is a clean, smokeless burner and appropriate for indoor cooking and mirco-gardening. These technologies are proving to be very affordable income generating tools for local households and an important life-skill for youths.
The TLUD stove uses other wastes like papyrus reeds, maize cobs, small sticks and stems plus other agricultural residues for cooking, thus tackling climate change by reducing cutting of trees and recycling wastes.
